Never drinking again
- Interviewer: “Pray for Tucson” is one of the darker songs on the record. I thought it might be about the Arizona shooting, but you said that was just a weird coincidence. What did you originally write it about?
- Dave: The Loved Ones had a great year in 2008. We were touring with The Hold Steady, Flogging Molly and all that. But a couple of things happened while we were touring that reminded me of how it could all end in a second. One of the incidents was when a wheel came off our truck and we almost died. A couple of months later we were going through Tucson and we saw a line of lights. It was about sun-down and there were thousands of cars stopped, and we saw a dead body in the middle of the road from an accident that just happened. So there were just a few sobering moments on that tour where I realized that no matter how good things are going, life is short. I’m not a praying man, but I come from a really religious background, and I know a lot of people at home are praying for me. It’s kind of like my weird agnostic thank you to them for at least considering our mortality.
